A DERELICT building which has blighted the Cardenden area for a decade or more, is finally being demolished.

Thanks to a superb community led campaign the former shop, which lies at the foot of the path to the village railway station, was this week on its way.

The shop has been empty for many years and slowly deteriorated to become and eyesore in the village.

It posed considerable concern for nearby residents who complained of vermin problems a few years back.

Fife Council had to tackle that issue and since then Cardenden Development Forum has been battling to get the owner of the property to either improve it or demolish it.

As part of the Cardenden Community Development Forum's 5 year Action Plan, the shop was purchased by the Forum, with the support of Fife Council and that has opened the door for it to be removed.

The demolition warrant has now been issued and work has commenced to demolish it.

The site is close to the entrance to the railway station and it is hoped with the support of ScotRail this area will be upgraded to create a better entrance to the station so that people coming to the village are not met by derelict property.

David Taylor, chair of Cardenden Community Development Forum said this week: "This has rid the village of another eyesore and now leaves the old Miners Institute to be dealt with which is another big problem..

"This won't be so straight forward as it is a listed building but it is a real mess on Main Street which blights this part of the village.

"But we are hopeful we can remove it too and give the village a fresh look."
