A COMMUNITY group is determined to ensure young children in the New Carden part of Cardenden are not left without any playparks.

In a few short weeks Cardenden Playpark Committee has organised a special Fun Day this weekend to start the fundraising drive which the group, made up of concerned mums, hope can see new life breathed into the dilapidated playpark near Cardenden Primary School.

Treasurer of the community group, Lynette Ross, said this week that Sunday's big Fun Day will be a key part of their campaign which they hope all parts of the Cardenden community will tap into to see playparks restored in the ABCD villages.

Said Lynette: "Fife Council have informed us that the playpark near the school will soon close because the equipment is nearing the end of its useful life.

"Also the Keirs Brae playpark may be next to shut and that would leave a large part of Cardenden, probably with a population of over 1500 people, with no playpark for under 6s."

The Playpark Committee has been set up to consult with residents in Cardenden to collate information, opinions and concerns relating to local play spaces, relate this information to Fife Council and other relevant organisations and ensure all the relevant information is placed in the public domain.

The Committee is also committed to promoting the health and well being of the community to look for solutions to increase and improve play spaces within the community.

Added Lynette: "The Fun Day, which sill start at noon at the Corrie Centre, is to open our fundraising for the development of a new playpark at the site near the school and we will have lots of games and a bouncy castle plus face painting and a disco.

"We want to hear people's views on the deteriorating condition of the playparks in the New Carden area and ideas on what they would like to see replacing the facilities.

"We know that it will not be something that can happen overnight but there are funding channels we can tap into and hopefully, with the people of Cardenden behind us, we can achieve what is needed to give the kids play areas like other communities in the Cowdenbeath area have."

During Sunday prizes will be handed out to the winners of a competition held asking children to design a replacement play park for the old facility near the school.
