PICKING up an accolade may have been a shock for Jim McGuinness but he's in doubt that the Times Community Champions Awards boosted cause he was acknowledged for.

With time running out to nominate those who make our communities a better place, last year's Community Champion of the Year – nominated for more than 50 years of work with scouting in Cardenden – said that our awards had led to an increase in numbers within the organisation.

Jim, 74, was chosen as our winner after becoming the 4th Fife cub pack's beating heart since first joining in the 1950s, going on to be a scout and serve as secretary of the troop.

His tireless work helped result in a revamped scout hall, a new minibus and trailer and more than £35,000 of grants from various sources being donated to the pack, as well as increased numbers joining them.

He still has an active role on the group's executive committee and Jim, of Lochgelly, said: "To tell you the truth, when I got the call that said I'd been nominated, I thought it was a wind up! Two or three days went by with no contact, and the next thing I knew, a letter came through the door.

"I'd seen it in the paper but I never thought I'd be nominated, never mind winning an award. It was a big thing for the cubs and scouts; not just me, but the whole committee. It was for them. You never think anything of it and then, the next thing you know, you're standing up getting the award!

"It increased our members in the community. We had a parents night where we appealed for more parents to get involved, and it definitely gave us a wee boost."

Jim was one of a huge number of deserving award winners and nominees who attended our awards, which recognise, celebrate and honour those who make a difference to our communities.

He added: "I got my leg pulled; especially about having my mug shot on the front of the Times! But I was quite happy and it was good to see people from different sections, like teachers and things, being recognised.

"A big thanks to you for doing this. The publicity is great and I really enjoyed the evening."

If you know someone who, for example, is the beating heart of sport, a teacher that is an inspiration to pupils, an outstanding child whose achievements, courage or bravery make your heart burst with pride, or who you think is worthy of a nomination in any of our 10 award categories, make sure you nominate by tomorrow (Thursday).
