A CROSSHILL couple have joined up with a Dunfermline football star and his fiancée to raise funds for premature babies.

Carrie Robson and Peter Greenhorn first met Joe Cardle and Lucy Patterson when they both found themselves caring for their new born babies in the Special Care Baby Unit in Kirkcaldy.

After going through the trauma of not being able to take their babies home for some weeks, the couples have decided to raise £5,000 each to go towards fitting and maintaining baby cams in premature baby incubators.

Carrie, 31, mum to four-month-old Jacob, said: "It was absolutely awful leaving Jacob at a night time - I wouldn't sleep I would just look at pictures of him I felt broken.

"He spent a total of six weeks and six days in the unit and I was discharged after only five days. It was the most heart-breaking moment of my life having to leave my tiny baby in hospital.

"I felt like a part-time parent.

"We thought it would be a brilliant idea to see how much money we can raise for cameras and maybe even money for accommodation, because some parents were coming from miles away every day."

Jacob arrived four weeks earlier than his due date and weighed just 2 pounds 9.

He spent the first six weeks of his life in an incubator where he was provided with a feeding tube and also had a tube up his nose to keep his airways open.

"There was no rhyme or reason why he came early but he was absolutely minute," Carrie added.

"He measured the length of my forearm, he was like a little doll.

"I almost spent seven weeks in the unit for nine hours a day.

"There were also parents there who were travelling from all over to get to Kirkcaldy every day and there was nowhere to stay.

"The unit had the baby cameras before for a trial, but they just don't have the money for them.

"If we raise the money then hopefully it will be a little bit easier for others."

Carrie and Peter will be hosting firewalking on December 3, as well as Christmas tombola and will be running 98 miles on the West Highland Way next year.

Lucy Patterson and Joe Cardle will be also hosting their own events to raise funds to add to the grand total.

Lucy said: “I had to give something back to the baby unity because of everything they have done for us.

"The hardest part was leaving the hospital without Lyla Jo.

"Our families and friends have been incredible so far and we've raised £3,000 in just two weeks."

The couple will also be putting on a ball and are hoping the Pars are going to be helping with some fundraising too.

Joe will also be running a marathon.
