A FORMER car valeter has been jailed for assaulting a police officer after he was stopped in his car for being unfit to drive.

Police had received intelligence prior to the incident regarding Andrew Snaddon and on June 12 they became aware of a silver BMW pulling into a street.

When they approached the vehicle they saw that Snaddon was driving the car and were giving the impression that he was under the influence of drugs.

He was slurring his words and became agitated.

Officers detained him for the purpose of a search and he began struggling with them.

They managed to cuff accused but he continued to kick and struggle with officers.

He kicked one constable several times while they also became aware of blue tablets that had fallen from Snaddon's clothing.

The drug was identified as diazepam and when asked about them he said, "They aren't mine."

Snaddon, 30, of Main Street, Crosshill, previously admitted that on June 12, on Inchgall Avenue, he did drive a mechanically propelled vehicle while unfit to do so through drink or drugs and he did assault a constable, then in the execution of his duty and did kick him on the legs.

He also admitted to having in his possession a controlled drug or drugs, namely Diazepam, a Class C drug.

Defence solicitor, Alexander Flett, admitted his client had a record but thought that there had been a marked decrease in his offending.

Sheriff Charles Macnair told Sneddon that assaulting an officer was a serious matter and reminded him that he was on bail at the time.

He was jailed for 257 days and disqualified from driving for three years.
