TESTING a car he had bought to do up while serving a driving ban landed a Crosshill man in court.

Daniel Hobbin, 22, appeared for sentencing at Dunfermline Sheriff Court after earlier admitting that on August 20, he drove while disqualified and without insurance on Benarty Avenue.

He was stopped by police officers just as he arrived home and admitted he had a six month ban.

Solicitor Alexander Flett said the vehicle had been bought as a "project" and Hobbin planned to have it fully prepared and road worthy by the end of the period of disqualification.

"He had taken the vehicle round the block," he added. "He does now appreciate the significance of the charges before the court and he appreciates the court will take a dim view of these matters."

Sheriff Charles Macnair placed Hobbin on a community payback order requiring him to do 140 hours of unpaid work within six months and banned him from driving for 22 months.

"Driving while disqualified is an offence which involves a custodial sentence if you repeatedly continue to drive while disqualified," he said. "As this is your first such offence, I am prepared to deal with it by way of a non custodial sentence."
