A CROSSHILL couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a special event at Benore Care Home, in Lochore.

Ruth, 88, and William Hutchison, 90, were married in April 1952 and William was to work in mining for most of his early working life.

Indeed, one of his proudest moments came while he was at the Westfield Opencast site and he was chosen to drive Her Majesty the Queen on her visit to the site in the early 1960s.

He recalled: "Her Majesty was having a look at the Westfield site's facilities and I was asked to drive her around. It was a rare honour."

William worked as a long distance lorry driver after quitting mining before becoming janitor at Crosshill Primary School.

Ruth, originally from Germany, settled in Crosshill and became a popular figure.

She recently has been a resident at Benore Care Home.

William was a keen fisherman at Lochore Meadows and also enjoyed shooting up Benarty Hill.

The couple, who had Provost of Fife, Jim Leishman, as one of their guests at their celebration, have a son and daughter, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
