FIVE students from Fife College are the latest lucky recipients of scholarships awarded through the College’s Adam Smith Foundation.

The five students, one of whom is from Benarty, were awarded Independent Living scholarships after completing a successful written application and interview alongside showing commitment to their studies and one hundred per cent attendance.

The students were presented with their scholarships of £100 each at a special presentation held at the College’s St Brycedale Campus in Kirkcaldy by Tracey Ford McNicol, Head of Department.

Four of the students: Thomas Anderson, (16) from Perth; Robert Hamilton, (19) from Glenrothes; Brian Skirving, (17) from Glenrothes; and Tamira Wood, (18) from Edinburgh, are all studying NC Acting and Performance while Amy Rafferty, (17) from Lochore, who was unfortunately unable to attend the presentation, is studying NC Child Health and Social Care.

Those attending the event were welcomed by Tracey Ford McNicol, Head of Department for Curriculum Partnership and Supported Learning and Gaynor Jarrett, Trust Fundraiser. Kieran McLoughlin, Acting and Performance lecturer and Tom McPherson, Trustee of the Adam Smith Foundation and Vice President of the Fife College Student Association were also delighted to attend.

Gaynor Jarrett said: “The Adam Smith Foundation was pleased to be able to widen the focus for this year’s Independent Living scholarship and encourage those who are young carers or have experience being in care, to apply. This recognises the College’s commitment to working with young carers and care experienced young people to support them with positive life chances and outcomes.

“The award winners were all extremely deserving and inspiring individuals who are hardworking and passionate about their studies. I would like to congratulate them all on their achievements and wish them the very best on their future studies and careers.”

Robert Hamilton (19), from Glenrothes, experienced difficult challenges in his earlier life, but is now thriving at College studying NC Acting and Performance Level 5. Said Robert: “A friend at High School encouraged me to come to College, it has been one of the best things I have ever done. I have previously lived in care and now live in supported lodgings. I’ve had addiction problems in the past and also suffer from arthritis however I have received great support while at College and met others who have been through similar experiences as myself which really helps.

“I initially studied plumbing and joinery but found it wasn’t for me. I’ve always been interested in drama and the actor Vincent Price has always inspired me - I reckon it’s good to study something you like doing. I’m really enjoying the course and have made some great friends. I hope to continue on to do the Level 6 course next year.”

The award winners plan to put their scholarships towards buying new laptops and to help fund travelling to College.
