A teenage drug-driver was caught behind the wheel when he was eight times over the limit for ketamine.

Lewis Gill, 19, of Keltyhill Avenue, Kelty, who appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court for sentencing, “thought he would be alright to drive”.

He previously admitted that on October 14 last year on the A909 at its junction with Gordon Street, Cowdenbeath, he drove a car under the influence of drugs.

Gill's reading was 160 microgrammes of ketamine per litre of blood, the legal limit being 20 microgrammes.

Depute fiscal Amy Robertson said police officers on mobile patrol saw Gill’s car being driven erratically in Cowdenbeath High Street at 2.20am.

The Volkswagen Polo was being driven slowly and he was repeatedly braking for no apparent reason.

He was stopped and when officers spoke to him he said he wanted to stay in the car as he felt he would be unsteady on his feet.

Defence solicitor Aime Allan said her client lives with his parents and was a first offender. “He thought he would be alright to drive but clearly he was not,” she added.

At the previous hearing, Sheriff Wylie Robertson warned Gill: “Serious disposals are being considered including custody.”

However, at sentencing, Sheriff Garry Sutherland imposed a 16-month driving ban and a £420 fine.

He told Gill: “Luckily this didn’t end up with you crashing and killing someone.

“Stay away from ketamine. It can do disastrous things to your body.”
