DAREDEVILS took on the hottest challenge in Crossgates by walking over fire on Friday night to raise more than £10,000 for charity.

A group of 51 brave souls put mind over matter and one foot in front of the other in the extreme mental test.

Money was raised for 19 different charities from Cancer Research to Help for Heroes – and donations are still pouring in.

The bonkers event was organised by Cowdenbeath local Lana Moffat who originally wanted to pull off the idea for pal Deanna Wilson.

Deanna is living with incurable cancer and Lana, 39, said: “I absolutely love organising events and fundraising is a bit of a hobby. This one was definitely a challenge but it was so worth it to see everyone’s faces and to feel the sense of pride and emotion running through the event.

“I originally organised the event to raise money for my beautiful friend, Deanna Wilson, from Crossgates, so she could have funds for any future clinical trials if they become available.

“I also wanted to raise money for my daughter, Angel, and her dance friends at Centre Stage Performing Arts School to go dance in Disney next year.

“From there, it grew arms and legs and I thought why only two things, why not lots of things close to my heart, so I ended up recruiting (and persuading) lots of fabulous people to do it for other causes.”

The fire-walkers participated in a 90-minute workshop in Crossgates Community Centre to help them to face their fears – and part of this included breaking an arrow on their throats!

Ready and pumped to take on the hot coals, the daredevils walked round to Humbug Park to cheers from a huge crowd of family and friends.

“I’ve taken on fire-walking before so when I was trying to persuade people I told them it was like walking on really hot sand barefoot abroad!” Lana explained.

“However, on the night, we had people saying it was like walking on hot straighteners!

"It’s 500-plus degrees so it’s going to be sore but all 51 walkers had different opinions and the ones who worried about doing it the most felt it the least, strangely. Some people have been left with little blisters, ouch!”

One brave walker Wendy Watson was so empowered by the event, the next day she went to get a tattoo on her foot of an arrow going through a flame as a constant reminder of the night and that she can do anything she puts her mind to.

Lana added: "I am absolutely blown away to say that going on initial figures (and there's still more to come) the walkers have overall raised more than £10,000.

"Donations are still welcome and are still coming in every day so this could very well be a lot more by the end of the week.

"I am so proud of every single person, it is mind blowing and I didn't think for one minute it would have such an impact, not only through the amount raised, but what the whole event has given to so many people who have taken part.

"Massive thanks to Lee Walls at Firewalk Scotland, Crossgates Primrose board members, Kevan McArthur and Sharron Mcgregor.

"Now I said never again but I am thinking next year it’s a glass walk!"
