KEEN golfers got in the swing and chipped in with more than £2,200 to support the legacy of a late Crossgates Commando.

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, which was established by his brother, Gary, after he passed away having suffered from a cardiac arrest while running the 2016 London Marathon for Help for Heroes.

Held on the course at Fairmont, St Andrews that was designed by Scottish and Ryder Cup golfing legend Sam Torrance, 16 teams took part in the team stableford competition to raise the four-figure sum, which doubled the amount collected 12 months ago.

Ahead of play, those taking part were able to practice with Fairmont's PGA professionals before observing a 105mm light gun salute in Captain Seath's memory, courtesy of the 105 Regiment Royal Artillery.

Gary commented: "It was wonderful to welcome a considerable number of return guests from last year, as well as new supporters, which contributed to a wonderful sense of atmosphere, solidarity and purpose.

"This year's event has proved a great success, which has doubled the amount raised from last year and we, as a family, are sincerely grateful to everyone who supported the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund Golf Day."

Since the fund's launch to provide a lasting legacy in honour of Captain Seath, who served in Afghanistan and the Middle East, it has raised more than £280,000 to support more than 250 personnel and veterans living with life-changing physical and psychological trauma, in partnership with Help for Heroes.

Every donation made in his memory is used to support Help for Heroes' Quick Reaction Fund, which provides specialist sports equipment, respite breaks and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) therapy, as well as facilitating supported employment placements, training courses and the setting up of small businesses.
