A MOVE is being made to keep the local supply of tools going to the TWAM base in Cowdenbeath.

Tools With A Mission have their only refurbishment centre in Scotland based at Woodend Industrial Estate, in Cowdenbeath, and at this site volunteers work hard to upgrade old items ready to be shipped out overseas where they can be used to help communities.

And Cowdenbeath Rotary Club, who have been supplying old tools for upgrade to TWAM for a few years now, are stepping up their bid to gather up as many unused items as possible for upgrading at Woodend.

The club's international convener, Tom Russell, told Thursday's meeting that TWAM was a Christian charity whose aim was to enable people in countries such as Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia and India, to earn a living and support themselves, their families and communities.

Tom is pictured with some of the tools that have been gathered recently for TWAM's Woodend base and he would welcome many more.

Said Tom: "I would like to appeal to people not to just throw away old tools they are finished with.

"These could be very valuable to people in the likes of Africa and India, and help communities make themselves self sustainable.

"We are set to start a campaign for collection of old tools in the district this autumn, but anyone who wants to pass on items just now can get in touch with myself and I can organise to get these picked up."

He went on: "We have been really pleased with the support that previous appeals for tools have had and without our public's support we would not be able to supply as many tools as we have been able to do in past years.

"We hope that this will again be possible this year and we are hoping to have a publicly accessible collection point this autumn to enable anyone with unwanted tools to take along to.

"All types of hand tools and power tools would be welcomed, no matter how old, for these can be made into tool kits for carpenters, electricans, vehicle mechanics, plumbers, builders, groundworkers, leather workers and cobblers.

"Things like drills, jigsaws, sanders, planes, bandsaws and even lathes, together with their accessories, would be valuable.

"If you can help contact myself and we can get things moving."
