THE opening of Kelty's own community cafe is only three weeks away and the volunteer team are desperate to ensure that everything is in place for Tuesday August 28.

Jackie Cooper, Billy Inglis and Linzi Forbes told Cowdenbeath Rotary Club on Thursday that their motto is 'Everyone Welcome, Make Oor Wee Cafe Your Wee Cafe'.

Jackie said: "Our doors open on Tuesday the 28th and it can't come quick enough.

"Oor Wee Cafe has come from five self motivated individuals who wanted to try this initiative to help rekindle community spirit in Kelty.

"The plan is to open every Tuesday at Kelty Community Centre and we have already been lucky to get generous backing from the business community of the village."

Billy said that he had seen the cafe idea on television succeeding in a community in England and in discussions with colleagues at the Job Club, in Kelty, it was felt it could work in the village.

He added: "The idea is that it is a wholly inclusive facility for everyone in the community and we would dearly like to see isolated people get the chance to attend on Tuesdays.

"It is fully accessible to ensure any disabled person can attend and we also have people ready to go and pick people up and assure that they can get to Oor Wee Cafe on a Tuesday."

Linzi said that the basic parameter is to give people the chance to have a decent meal for a donation.

She added: "We will have a set menu which will have soup and stovies on it and there will also be a gluten free option.

"Stephens the Bakers and the Co-op have offered to donate their end of day items that are left over and that will be very valuable.

"We want to target those who are socially isolated to give them the opportunity to have a couple of hour out of the house, a meal and a blether."

Linzi said that they have had funding from BRAG and the National Lottery which has helped make Oor Wee Cafe possible and there are other applications for backing in the pipeline.

Jackie added: Things are really starting to take shape now. Thanks has to go out to everyone who has been involved so far, the volunteers have worked so hard to get this off the ground and its not always been easy.

"There have been many barriers along the way and a few disappointments but finally everything is looking up and the cafe is going to happen.

"We are always looking for volunteers to join us and put their should their shoulder to the wheel."
