A Cardenden man threatened his partner after a trip to the bingo and continued to be abusive even when police arrived.

McCowat, 35, of Carden Avenue, Cardenden, previously admitted that on June 30 at the same address did behave in a threatening or abusive manner which is likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm in that he did repeatedly shout, swear and act in an aggressive manner towards his partner.

Dunfermline Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that McCowat and the complainer have been in a relationship for the last four years and two years ago he lost his sight because of a genetic condition.

The diagnosis had caused him depression and he started to drink heavily as a result.

On June 30 McCowatt had consumed six pints of beer and was drunk. When the couple arrived home at around 9pm they began arguing.

He made a threatening remark towards his partner and continued to argue with her.

She tried to remain calm and ignored his behaviour and while the accused was in the bathroom she picked up her car keys and left.

When McCowat realised his partner had gone he phoned the police saying he was going off his head the complainer had accused him of hitting her.

Officers found him in the garden clearly under the influence of alcohol and he told them he was feeling low.

His partner returned to the home at 11pm and officers took her to the kitchen, but McCowat kept coming into the room making aggressive remarks, shouting and swearing.

He was then arrested.

Defence solicitor Ms Caldwell said: "On the night in question he had been out with the complainer at the bingo.

"He has little recollection of the events.

"Alcohol was a significant problem for him but he has now lowered his levels and he only had a few cans on the night.

"He is extremely remorseful. He is highly dependant on his partner and she is here to support him.

"The disease has had a detrimental affect on his life."

Sheriff Charles Macnair said: "This was a nasty offence towards your partner and it seems to have gone on for a while which resulted in her having to leave.

"You also continued it even when the police were there.

"I do not accept that you just had a few cans as the evidence I've heard shows that you were significantly under the influence of alcohol at the time."

McCowat was placed on a supervision order for 18 months.
