Betfred Cup

Attendance-374

CHAMPIONSHIP side Caley won a goal feast as both teams created a lot of chances in this Betfred tie at Central Park last night.

Caley boss John Robertson was delighted to get the points in the bag: “Cowdenbeath certainly came at us in the early stages and scored a good goal and it took time for us to get back into it but we did not panic and I felt we were worth the three points over the 90 minutes.

"However, what I can say is that Cowdenbeath are set for a good season on that form."

Home boss Gary Bollan was unhappy with the third goal: “It looked like a foul and it was at a key time. We started well and had the chance to get two up early on, but going in at the interval two goals behind was hard to take.”

In 13 minutes Cowden put together a good moved involving Jordyn Sheerin and Martin Scott and David Cox’s 18 yarder just cleared the Caley bar but within two minutes Dave McGurn was in action when he finger-tipped over a White header. At the other end in 21 minutes a Sheerin lay-off to Cox set the striker up six yards out but be blazed over.

A minute later the Fifers did go ahead. SHEERIN took Scott’s slip and crashed an 18 yarder high past Mark Ridgers.

The Fifers should have scored again six minutes later when Sheerin set up Scott only eight yards out but he fired wide, then the home side paid for the miss in 34 minutes when Tom WALSH sent in a fierce 19 yarder wide of the stranded McGurn and in 41 minutes he repeated the dose with another well placed shot.

Then three minutes later Thistle got a controversial third when the ball fell to Aaron DORAN COGAN on the edge of the six yard box looking suspiciously like off Ian Polworth’s arm, but the referee waved play on and the midfielder netted from close in to give the Championship side a 3-1 interval lead.

Cowden opened the second period well and Robbie Buchanan’s deflected 18 yarder landed on the top of the net.

However, in 57 minutes Doran chased a long ball and knocked the ball passed McGurn but Jamie Pyper brilliantly got back and booted the ball off the line.

The fourth goal did come two minutes later when McGurn blocked a close in header from White and sub George OOAKLEY was lying handy to shoot home from eight yards range.

Then with 12 to go DORAN COGAN's shot from 25 yards took a fierce deflection off defender Jamie Pyper and sent McGurn the wrong way but within two minutes SHEERIN burst through the Caley defence and fired in a second for the Blue Brazil.

In the last minute Cox saw his shot headed off the line by Carl Tremarco.
