PEOPLE are being urged to support a fundraising scheme geared to raising £10,000 to provide a Drivedeck at Lochore Meadows Country Park.

The Drivedeck is geared to giving people with disabilities the opportunity to explore the park and fully enjoy its facilities.

Powered mobility provides children with the opportunity to experience not only movement but also crucially, the potential to explore independently and to initiate their own play.

Patient endowment funds from Fife Health and Social Care have funded the purchase and installation of permanent outdoor track and SMILE Smart Technology have loaned a Drivedeck to get the project up and running this summer, but as Park Manager Ian Laing said they need to raise £10,000 to purchase the Drivedeck to ensure it continues to be available to children and young people.

Said Mr Laing: "The Drivedeck, with the line following track, is a motivational and fun tool that encourages users to proactively explore their environment in safety whatever their disability.

"The aim is to raise £10,000 to allow it to be purchased and make the project progress."

The Drivedeck is a free resource bookable at the Meadows Park Centre.

For children who cannot operate a traditional conventional powered wheelchair the deck is a platform onto which their own wheelchair is easily transferred. The Deck's smart technology enables the child to move the Drivedeck independently using a basic button switch.

Benarty community activists, Willie Clarke and Brian Menzies, are encouraging people to back the appeal.

Said Willie: "This is an amazing piece of equipment that could offer so much to children with disabilities.

"It is a very worthy cause which is worth backing and can do so much for disabled children."

Brian added: "It would be brilliant if the public of the Cowdenbeath-Lochgelly area could support this project for it would make the Meadows and even more impressive facility.

"It would be good too if the business community could back the Drivedeck campaign."
