TWO people who have done a lot of good work for Cowdenbeath Rotary Club were made honorary members by the organisation on Thursday night.

Both are former presidents and have been involved in many roles in the rotary club.

They were Bob Shepherd and Lesley Porter who have both had to resign from the club in recent times for different reasons.

Bob was president in the 1995-1996 Rotary Year. Membership convener Alex Cuthbertson recalled that Bob had been brought up in the Benarty area and had been a teacher at both Ballingry Junior High and Lochgelly Junior High Schools.

He had been involved in pipe bands from being a young man and became a well known teacher of piping at both schools and saw them develop prize winning combinations.

Bob also saw Dysart and Dundonald become World Champions and then started his own pipe band equipment factory in Cardenden which is still very successful today.

Alex added: "Bob is one of the world's most respected competition judges but he has had to reduce his involvement due to declining health and that was why he had to resign from the club."

Lesley Porter became involved in the Rotary Club through being depute rector at Beath High School and linking in a number of school activities.

She joined in the early part of the decade and became president over a two year period and served the club well.

Alex reported that Lesley retired from her job at Beath and had become involved in a new role in the University sector which had seen her doing a lot of travelling and that was one of her reasons for resigning from the club.

Alex added: "Lesley has always been a strong advocate of rotary youth activities and has organised a lot of events.

"She has always been a very hard worker for the club, whether wearing the president's chain or organising events and the club council felt she was a worthy recipient of an honorary membership."

Both said they were deeply honoured to receive their accolades and hope to visit the club when able.
