WORK will begin on Monday on a major project to give Cowdenbeath a new look.

And the town's business community have been assured that the High Street revamp, which will run from the Fountain down to just beyond railway bridge, the will not pose them any major problems.

The total package will see an investment worth more than £600,000 plied into further rejuvenating the retail hub of Cowdenbeath.

The Fife Council man who has been working closely on this project for some considerable time, Andrew Walker, said this week: "Everything gets underway on Monday and things will start in Brunton Square and move northwards.

"It will start with the replacement of the paving, which has suffered considerably, and will see it replaced on both sides of the road to beyond the bridge.

"Already we have the mural on the wall of Brunton House highlighting Cowdenbeath's mining heritage and a special garden is going to be constructed to complete this link with the reason the town developed so fast."

Andrew Added: "The pavement surfaces are also not good at the area near the railway station and that will make difference to people entering the town from the station.

"The Green Square is an important part of the project and while a number of improvements have taken place there this project will see it completely enhanced and become a feature which people will want to stop at, especially in weather like we have been experiencing.

"More seating and floral features will make it the star attraction on High Street."

Andrew stressed that this work will help attract more people to Cowdenbeath: "We want to help make the High Street a place people will want to visit so during the work, which will take around six months to complete, nothing will be taking place outside businesses during their hours of operation.

"We will be working with the business community throughout the project."
