A LOCHGELLY pensioner got on his bike at the weekend to raise money for CHAS.

Andrew Greenhorn, 76, got a team of 12 cyclists together – including 10-year-old local boy Carter Greig – for his third 24-mile sponsored cycle to Milnathort and back.

Although he doesn't know yet how much he has raised, he expects to have raised more than £2,000 from the event.

"I won't know what I have got until about the end of July," said the CHAS fundraiser. "I ended up with 12 bikers and we have waited three years for a day like that. The weather was perfect."

Andrew, a father-of-two, grandad-of-four and a great-grandad, was delighted to have a younger cyclist take part this year.

"I was going round the doors getting sponsor money and at Mackenzie Crescent, a lady opened the door and I asked if she would like to sponsor me and I noticed a cycle helmet," he explained.

"She said it was her son's who was 10 and I asked if he wanted to do the ride as well and he was as keen as mustard to do it and did it with his dad as well.

"The wee boy did really well and he was determined to do it. I was fair proud and fair proud of the young boy."

Andrew, of Ballingry Street, has been taking part in sponsored cycles since 1990 and he raised upwards of £60,000 for Lymphoma Research over a decade through taking part in a sponsored cycle run from Kingussie.

When these stopped due to the organisers having to give up, he decided to back CHAS and, over the past two years, has helped raise more than £7,000 for the children's hospice charity.

"I am 76 now and I am hoping to keep going with it," he added.
