TWO brothers from Lochgelly will this year be lining up against each other in the English Premier Ice Hockey League.

Jordan and Renny Marr have gone a long way in the sport and were giving a helping hand at the beginning of their sporting careers by the Mary Leishman Foundation.

The siblings, both goalies, were one of the first applicants to benefit from the Foundation when they received funds to help buy kit.

Jordan, 26, has just signed for Peterborough Phantoms while younger brother Renny, 20, is about to start his second season with the Swindon Wildcats.

Dad Gordon, of Lindsay Place, said the help given by the Foundation, firstly to Jordan, was extremely important as his boys were starting on their road to success.

"You can only do so much and the Mary Leishman Foundation were very good and stepped in and gave them a donation to get them goalie kit and it was very much appreciated at the time," he said.

"Jordan was one of the first beneficiaries of the foundation. At the time, he was 15 or 16 and was training with Fife Flyers and the coach at that time was a Fife legend, Frank Morris. He recommended he should be going to Canada as he was too good to be playing over here.

"He was a goalkeeper and that brings with it a massive amount of kit. We were travelling all over the country for big tournaments and he got an opportunity to go to Ontario Hockey Academy in Canada.

"The Mary Leishman Foundation made contributions which helped buy his kit. Then, a few years down the line, Renny followed suite into the goalkeeping genre.

"It was a similar thing for him. He was wearing Jordan's second-hand kit for a while and he was also starting to do really well and they helped him with kit as well and put him on the path to where he is now."

Not quite following in his big brother's footsteps, Renny stayed in the UK to establish himself. He played for the Fife Flyers and represented Great Britain at under-18 and under-20 level before signing for Coventry Blaze where he spent two years.

He moved onto Swindon last year and will line up for them in goals again this year.

After several years in Canada and America, Jordan returned to the UK and spent last season with the Fife Flyers before signing for Peterborough last month.

"This season will be the first time they have played against each other but it doesn't really bother them," added Gordon.
