A FUNDRAISING run in honour of a late Crossgates army captain that attracted hundreds of entrants is to be held again this year.

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund have confirmed that the 5km event, in Dunfermline's Pittencrieff Park, will return for a second year on Sunday April 22 in his memory.

Captain Seath, a commando who served in Afghanistan and the Middle East with the 19th Regiment Royal Artillery and 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery respectively, died while running the 2016 London Marathon for Help for Heroes.

He suffered a cardiac arrest three miles short of the finish line and, a month later, the fund was started by brother Gary to support personnel and veterans of the armed forces living with life-changing physical and psychological trauma.

To mark the first anniversary of his passing, a commemorative run was held and raised more than £1,600 for the fund, and Captain Seath's family said they were "overwhelmed" by the turnout.

Now they're calling on runners, walkers and dog-joggers of all ages and abilities to shake off their festive food and get ready to complete three laps of the Dunfermline park circuit

Gary said: "Last year we were overwhelmed by the support from the local and, indeed, wider community keen to join us at Pittencrieff Park to commemorate David's life, which contributed to a wonderful sense of solidarity.

"We are delighted that the Captain David Seath 5k Memorial Run will return for its second year and we look forward to welcoming everyone, once again, for a very special event in David's memory."

Since its foundation the memorial fund, which was named Charity Champion of the Year at this year's Times/Press Community Champions Awards in June, has raised more than £273,000.

That cash has enabled them to support more than 220 beneficiaries through Help for Heroes, and those who have benefitted from the fund have used its financial support to purchase specialist rehabilitation and sports therapy equipment, enable PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) therapies and respite breaks as well as help supported employment placements, training courses and the setting up of businesses.

After last year's event, Captain Seath's mum Libby said: "While the anniversary is a horrible day for us, the memory of this event is very special – it feels like David is still with us.

"We hope to make this an annual event and continue to do what David started – raising funds for wounded, injured and sick veterans through Help for Heroes. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who have supported us."
