MEMBERS of Cowdenbeath Environment Group were disheartened to find that vandals have turned their attention to the Millenium Garden in Perth Road.

After a very active spring and summer season when their work saw Cowdenbeath get a silver in the Beautiful Fife Awards, they were shocked to learn of the results of unwanted visitors fire raising in the Millenium Garden.

Not only was a tree badly damaged but a bird's nest was destroyed by these people's actions.

The Environment Group have seen that sort of activity in the Community Woodland but it was a real blow to them to see it happen in a feature in the town that marked the new millenium.

Said the member of the Group who discovered the damage: "I was up working at the Millennium Garden last weekend.  And as can see from the photograph we have had visitors to the site. That now makes it three out three.

"In the last twelve months we have had trees set on fire at the Community Woodland, Dalbeath Marsh and finally the Millennium Garden.

"That particular tree was probably planted round about the year 2000. What a sad state of affairs.

"Bad enough that there is damage to the tree but the fact is there was even a birds nest in it which was destroyed.

"Alcoholic drinks cannisters were also found.  The situation has been reported to police".

The Community Police team will be investigating the incident at the Garden but although disappointed by this blow, the Environment Group will look to do what they can to repair the damage done.

The Group gave the centre of Cowdenbeath a lovely colourful touch during the summer months with a mixture of floral features.

Their work at Dalbeath Gardens and the Community Woodland has been outstanding over recent years as well as at the Millenium Garden.
