AN organisation which has provided two major events annually for senior citizens in Benarty celebrates its 60th anniversary in September.

Lochore Old People's Welfare Council has held a host of summer drives over the decades with the latest being a highly successful day out to Largs in July.

Also every festive season a Christmas party is held.

To celebrate the Council's 60th birthday a special celebration has been organised for Friday September 15 at Lochore Institute.

Long serving chairman Joe Paterson said: "The Lochore and District Old People's Welfare Council has been providing services for the area's senior citizens since 1957, thanks to the work of a series of volunteers forming the management committee in that time.

"Thanks to support from the public we still organise the summer drive and Christmas party and the backing of the Lochore Institute is first class.

"We are looking forward to a great day on September 15."

This year's summer drive for over seventies in Benarty was to Largs.

It started as a dismal Tuesday morning when two coaches collected the senior citizens from Ballingry, Lochore and Crosshill and headed off for the first port of call, The Wool Mill at Coatbridge, where restaurant and comfort facilities were available.

The senior citizens took account of the number of offers that were being made on various garments.

Leaving Coatbridge the sun came out and it set the scene for the drive through some stunning scenery heading towards Largs.

There the senior citizens visited many shops, tea rooms and hotels before heading for the popular Willowbank Hotel where a high quality high tea was served.

After the meal the senior citizens relaxed before returning home after enjoying a great day out.
