A COWDENBEATH student has proved she has what it takes to succeed in a very competitive industry by achieving a second place award in the Inter College Painting and Decorating Competition 2017.

Fife College hosted the second annual event at its Halbeath Campus which saw colleges from across Scotland compete for the first place trophy.

Six teams took part on the day and were expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed at college by following a detailed and precise brief and guide.

NPA Construction students at Fife College, Erin Duffy, (18) from Cowdenbeath, and Shannon Combe, (17) from Rosyth, were delighted to have been awarded with a second place prize for their joint effort in the competition.

Erin said: “I was delighted to hear that Shannon and I had done so well. I have really enjoyed the course this year and it has made me very excited for what the future might bring.”

Construction Craft Lecturer, Andrew Morrison, is extremely pleased with the result and knows it was the girls’ commitment and dedication to their studies that enabled them to achieve this.

He said: “Well done to Erin and Shannon! Not only have you made me proud but you have made the entire College proud. Your passion was evident from the start and this competition has proved just how much you have developed in such a short space of time. I definitely see a bright future ahead for the both of you.”

Two students from City of Glasgow College were awarded the first place trophy and two students from Forth Valley College won third place.

The event was introduced last year by the Scottish Association of Painting Craft Teachers (SAPCT) as a memorial for the late George Todd, who was the president of the organisation. Students who are studying a relevant City and Guilds qualification or National Progression Award (NPA) are eligible to compete.
