THE village's link with the black diamonds will be remembered this weekend at a special event being sponsored by Kelty Community Council.

The Kelty Mining Heritage Weekend will be held in the new community centre starting at noon and running through to 6pm and be also on during Monday from 10am to 8pm.

But before all that there will be a showing of the feature film “The Happy Lands” in the Moray Institute, at 7.30pm on Friday.

Popular mining historian Chris Sparling has been helping the community council put the event together and he hopes that the people of the village will enjoy what is on offer over the two days.

Janet Buist, of the community council said: "The exhibition will be an opportunity for members of the public to view, for free, illustrated information on the history of the Kelty pits and the story of coal.

"There will be wonderful displays of pictures and paintings, and mining artefacts, etc., all relating to the proud heritage of coal mining in the Kelty area.

"Speakers will also be present throughout the Sunday afternoon (no specific details at present) and several displays and/or activities over the two-day event, will enable visitors – young and old – to participate in, and recall, the many aspects and memories of the social life in a typical mining village.

"Booklets and brochures commemorating the event will also be on sale".

Janet added: "The Kelty community was built on coal and the exhibition will all people to see what life was like in a miners' row cottage and what social life was like in the village when the two collieries were operating along with role women played in the pits.

"And of course we will have a special item on the 1957 Lindsay Colliery Disaster of which there is film."
