A ONE-of-a-kind Autism charity, in Cowdenbeath, has been awarded funding to continue its life changing work in Scotland and across the UK thanks to a national housebuilder.

Appaws for Autism - a charity that train dogs as aids for autistic adults and children - has received a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes Community Champions Scheme to complete their support centre at Woodend.

The centre, which opened last Monday, will provide access for those with autistic spectrum disorder to use computers, learning resources, books and games.

Carol Chisholm from the charity said: “We are thrilled to have received this funding from Persimmon. Our service is the only one of its kind to provide and train dogs as aids to those with autism.

“For someone with the disorder, a dog trained specifically to suit their needs can make all the difference. I myself have seen a young boy go from shy and un-involved to engaged and excited as a result of having one of these dogs.”

She added: “The new centre is nearly completed, but this grant will help us add the finishing touches and become a great resource for not only those on the autistic spectrum, but also their families.”

Iain Innes, managing director for Persimmon Homes North Scotland, said: “We are delighted to support this unique charity that has worked extremely hard to create this centre and train these amazing dogs.

“We are extremely passionate about the areas we build in and welcome any opportunity to support the local community. Appaws for Autism have already done so much for the community and we are pleased to say we have been able to help them continue their fantastic work.”

The Persimmon Homes Community Champion scheme is available to all charities, local groups and schools who have already worked hard to raise money themselves to apply for up to £1000 match-funding by completing an online form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity.

Persimmon Homes North Scotland is currently building in Fife at its Carnegie Fauld development including a range of 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes.
