REPAIRS to the 18th century Kelty Bridge will cost around £10,000 and should start this month.

Fife Council received listed building consent for works on the Main Street crossing, which include re-pointing and painting.

The category B listed sandstone arch bridge, parts of which are thought to date back to 1724, forms the boundary between Fife and Perth and Kinross.

The council's Murray Scott said they hoped to start work this month, provided the correct type of stone can be sourced.

He said: "The work will cost approximately £10,000 and should take around four weeks, weather permitting.

"Our intention is to keep the road open to minimise disruption, but a traffic management system will be in place."

A report said that the bridge had a number of minor defects which required to be rectified "in order to prolong its life span".

It added: "These are re-pointing of the joints, masonry repairs, arch repairs, scour repairs, buttress repairs and painting of the pattress plates."

Specialist advice was obtained for the repair works from the Scottish Lime Centre, in Limekilns.
