LOCAL councillors are most unhappy at the way the North End Park area of Cowdenbeath has been allowed to deteriorate.

The former Tesco site in the town has been getting worse and worse as the summer has gone on and councillors Peter Lockhart and Alistair Bain want something to be done to improve the situation.

The former top class football pitch at the northern entrance to High Street has become totally overgrown with the pavilion surrounded by weeds and long grass.

Earlier in the year the firm of developers who brought the site from Tesco had announced that they hoped to soon have two retail units built on North End Park, but currently all that there is there is a wilderness.

Two members of Cowdenbeath Area Committee hit out this week at the situation and said that they would be trying to find out if the developers had any plans to sort the problem out.

Said Councillor Alistair Bain: "It is an awkward situation with the land now being owned by a different set of developers.

"However, earlier this year we were assured by them that they would be demolishing the pavilion and generally cleaning up the site.

"However, what we have now is a total mess that does nothing for the attractiveness of the north end of High Street."

His colleague, Councillor Peter Lockhart added: "We had a similar problem last year and the council's parks and outdoor areas department was able to tackle it by keeping the grass within bounds.

"What we are now seeing is nothing at all being done to keep the grass down at a time of warm weather and plenty of rain.

"This added to the burned out shell of the Crown Hotel means that the wrong impression of Cowdenbeath is being sent out."

Both councillors said that they would be contacting the developers to see if they were aware of the gravity of the situation and ask that something be done to sort the problem out.

The third Cowdenbeath member, Gary Guichan, contacted us from his holiday destination to say he would join them in making representations on his return.
