ILLEGAL dumping around Cowdenbeath’s Recycling Centre was this week labelled as a ‘disgrace’.

The Cuddyhouse Road facility is one of the biggest and most well used in Fife but over the past few weeks all sorts of rubbish has been found on the road leading to the site.

Our reporter found rubbish strewn on the Cuddyhouse Road literally yards from the Recycling Centre.

On top of tyres there were shopping bags, crisp bags, a basin and building rubble plus plastic bags hanging from the wire fencing.

Not the best advertisement for the town of Cowdenbeath and it has upset the Environment Group and the Community Council plus local councillor Gary Guichan.

Said chairman of Cowdenbeath Community Council, Alex Haddow: “It really looks untidy and with it being only a few yards from the Recycling Centre it really is mind numbing.

“It seems as if people just are dumping things out of their cars which really is unacceptable.

“Why throw things about when a place which is designed to recycle all sorts of rubbish is there with staff to assist.”

And a spokesperson for the Cowdenbeath Environment Group said: “There is a string of rubbish of all sorts dumped items on the road leading to the Centre.

“Why dump tyres at the side of the road when these could be put in for recycling.

“Then there is the wind blown stuff sticking to the fence which really looks horrendous, it really is a disgrace and does not tell the right story about Cowdenbeath.”

Councillor Gary Guichan said that education was something which could have an effect on persuading people that illegal dumping is wrong and unsightly.

He added: “The people that cause this sort of mess are being irresponsible.

“The Recycling Centre is an excellent facility and the opening hours are well advertised so there is no reason to just dump stuff by the side of the road.

“It does nothing for the town and we need to get over that people should use the Recycling Centre.”
