A music festival large enough to host 15,000 fans a day is set to take place in Dundee next summer.

Councillors approved plans earlier this month for Carnival 56 at Camperdown Park.

The fest, named after the coordinates of Dundee, is set to take place over two days, August 12 and 13.

There will be five live music areas including a main stage, big top tent and VIP section along with bars and food concessions.

Festival organisers hope the event will attract around 15,000 people each day, although they applied for a capacity of 19,999.

No acts have been booked yet for the festival, but organisers hope to feature a mix of local and nationally known bands, DJs and performers.

The council’s licensing board approved the application unanimously, and welcomed such a big event taking place in Dundee.

Festival founder Craig Blyth said: "This is an exciting time for the city with the waterfront regeneration and major inward investment attracting significant focus and interest nationally and internationally.

"Since the success of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2006, which attracted 30,000 fans to Camperdown Park, no major music festival has been staged in Dundee.

"With an excellent location and first class transport links, there has never been a better time to capitalise on the unique momentum the city is enjoying, along with the appetite from the public for a music festival. The countdown to Carnival Fifty Six is now officially on.”

Production company Loudsound will be responsible for making sure the festival runs safely and smoothly.

The London-based business have been responsible for some of the country’s top music events, including RockNess, Bestival and British Summer Time at Hyde Park.

Loudsound operations director, Dave Grindle, said the company were looking forward to providing a “safe and secure” event.

He said: “Camperdown Park in Dundee presents an excellent opportunity as a location to stage an inner-city music event. Loudsound looks forward to working with the team and deploying its extensive festival management experience to deliver a professional, safe and secure event where everyone can enjoy themselves.”
