Boss unhappy with 'below par' performance
By Jim Stark
Saturday's goalless draw with East Stirling did nothing to help Cowdenbeath’s bid to dent the lead held by Stenhousemuir in the Barrs Irn Bru Third Division.
With Stenny dropping two points to a last minute leveller at home to Forfar Athletic the opportunity was there for Cowden to win and close the gap to three points.
Alas the gap is still five points but the fact is that it could have been a whole lot worse.
The Blue Brazil could easily have lost to East Stirling, especially in the closing stages of the match, a point not lost on Cowden boss Danny Lennon.
He said this week, “That was a well below par performance over all. In the first-half we faced the strong wind and the rain and defended really well but too often at the other end our last pass was poor and we did not create many good openings.
“In the second-half, with the elements in our favour, we seemed to get over anxious at not getting an early goal and in the latter stages we started to lose our shape.
“There were too many long balls which were gobbled up by their defence and over the piece we simply did not get enough shots on target”.
He added, “With Stenhousemuir dropping points we missed a chance to close the gap but it was just not to be”.
The manager had a dispute with some fans on Saturday after his substitution of midfielder Marek Tomana late on. The fans verbally attacked the decision and he responded.
He said later, “I can understand the fans’ frustration on Saturday but I made the decision in a bid to try and win the game and I hope they respect that.”
Cowden have a week off this Saturday when Scotland entertain Norway in a World Cup qualifier.
Their next outing is at Annan on 18th October and their next home match is against Elgin City on 25th October in the second round of the Scottish Cup.
