Scottish Cup battlers force three replays
By Jim Stark
One club through, one out and three replays was the local return from the Scottish Junior Cup first round on Saturday.
Ballingry Rovers marched through to the next round while Dundonald Bluebell exited but Lochore Welfare, Crossgates Primrose and Hill of Beath Hawthorn live to fight another day.
Beith 3, Haws 3.
THIS was always going to be a tough one for Hill of Beath Hawthorn but they made the best possible start to the tie.
Stephen Bathgate produced some expert finishing to give his side the advantage but Beith were a useful looking outfit and they levelled shortly after.
Hill of Beath were winning more than their fair share of ball in midfield and they grabbed the initiative again when Bathgate thumped home his second of the match.
Beith were dangerous down the flanks and again drew level and then a well placed header put the home side ahead.
However, in a late Haws raid Michael Stewart grabbed the all important goal which set up this weekend’s replay.
Lugar 1, Rovers 3.
THIS was a highly competent Ballingry Rovers performance against decent opposition away from home.
But they had to come from behind as Lugar took the lead in 15 minutes from a penalty award.
Ballingry kept working away and were rewarded when Lee Dair’s free-kick was headed home by Brian Roberts.
Rovers always looked dangerous flooding forwards and before the interval James Adam was rewarded for chasing a long ball by catching it and then producing an excellent finish.
In the second period Lugar started to fade out of the picture and Rovers created several good chances and a third goal from Shaun Graham wrapped up a good win.
Glencairn 1, Welfare 1.
LOCHORE Welfare gave Rutherglen Glencairn plenty to think about in Glasgow and thoroughly deserved their replay.
The first period saw both teams have periods in control but the closest to a goal came at Lochore’s end when Glencairn twice struck the bar following a corner.
But Lochore were working hard and they got a boost in 64 minutes when John Ferguson held off two defenders 25 yards out and then sent a delightful lob over the keeper.
Lochore looked capable of winning the tie on the road but had a set-back when John Cusick was sent-off.
Then with 12 minutes left Rutherglen levelled when a shot took a wicked deflection and flew over Willie Crowe.
Blairgowrie 0, Primrose 0.
BLAIRGOWRIE gave Crossgates Primrose’s defence a good work-out in Perthshire but the Humbug Park men were up to the task.
The first-half saw Blair have some decent chances but they were given little time by the hard working Crossgates team and at the break there were no goals.
In the second period Primrose had a few decent openings of their own but at the end of the day a draw was the right result.
Largs 2, Bluebell 1.
DUNDONALD Bluebell came so close to getting a replay in this tie at Largs Thistle.
The visitors were very much in the picture in the first period and took the lead with a spectacular 35 yard free-kick from Martin Thomson.
Then Ray Morgan saw a shot cleared off the line so Bluebell could have been more than a goal to the good at the interval.
But in the second period Largs started to take control and the equaliser came on the hour from a well placed shot.
Dundonald could just not get back into the game but defended well until with 12 minutes left Largs struck to grab the winner from close in.
Forfar WE 2, Hearts 0.
KELTY Hearts form slump in the East Super League continued at Forfar West End on Saturday.
Forfar were an eager lot and they opened the game well and grabbed the opening goal on only three minutes.
Kelty seemed out of sorts and just could not create enough good chances and at the interval West End looked comfortable.
In the second period Kelty continued to struggle and when Forfar doubled their lead there was no way back for the local side.
Things were made worse when Dennis Currie was sent off for dissent with 25 minutes left and then with three minutes to go Kelty were down to nine with Tam Courts’ sending off for a second yellow card.
St Andrews 3, Albert 0.
LOCHGELLY Albert went to St Andrews in a bid to make a mark in the Central League championship race but they failed badly.
Albert were slow out of the traps and United controlled the game and grabbed an early lead.
A second before the interval put St Andrews in firm control and in the second-half Lochgelly just could not create many good openings.
A third goal only succeeded in emphasising United’s superiority on the day and leave Lochgelly trailing in the title race.
SATURDAY’S fixtures: Scottish Junior Cup replays, Hill of Beath Hawthorn v Beith, Lochore Welfare v Rutherglen Glencairn, Crossgates Primrose v Blairgowrie (3pm). East Premier League, Dundee North End v Ballingry Rovers (2.30).
