Success for Kelty Hearts in a local cup final but defeat for Hill of Beath Hawthorn in the final of the Fife and Lothians Cup were the weekend’s junior returns as the season came to an end for local sides.

On Saturday Camelon proved too strong for Haws at Linlithgow while on Friday night Hearts had to work hard to beat Thornton Hibs at Keir’s Park.

Camelon 5, Haws 0.

A STRONG second-half performance gave Camelon an emphatic victory in the Fife and Lothians final but to be fair, the Falkirk based side were always in control.

It was as if this was a game too many for the village side who struggled to find any rhythm.

In saying that the opening phase of the game was pretty evenly contested and after 15 minutes there was no scoring but on the 20 minute mark Camelon took the lead.

Haws were creating a few decent openings and Willie McGlaughlin came close twice with a shot and a header before Camelon scored their second shortly before half-time.

A third in 47 minutes and the sending off of Calum Bissett in 55 minutes for a second booking basically gave Haws too much of a mountain to climb but Fraser Beveridge saw the Camelon ‘keeper pull off two good saves from shots.

The ten men battled away but a strike in 62 minutes put them out of site and a 70th minute goal put the icing on the cake for Camelon.

Haws chairman David Baillie praised Camelon, “They were by far the better side on the day.

“Our lads struggled to create a lot but it as pleasing to get to the final of a prestigious competition.”

Hearts 2, Thornton 0.

KELTY Hearts ensured that they ended the season on a high note at Keir’s Park on Friday night.

The Maloco Associates Cup final saw battlers Thornton Hibs provide the opposition and after their fine Scottish Junior Cup run no Hearts fans were under any illusion as to what test awaited their side.

Indeed, in the early stages the well tested Hibs battle plan of containing well and hitting on the break saw Kelty find space at a premium.

However, the Super League team did create some good chances but as the interval approached it seemed certain that the scoreline would be blank.

Then seconds before the break John Martin was floored in the Thornton box and the midfielder got up to score from the spot to give his side the advantage.

The second period saw Hibs following their plan to the letter and again Hearts found it hard to create a lot of chances but what openings that were created fell mostly to Kelty and they could have had the tie settled before the second goal came in 85 minutes.

Conrad Courts, who was named man of the match, swung the ball into the box and there was Russell Smart to convert and ensure the Maloco Associates Cup was going to Kelty.

Hearts boss Stevie Leighton was delighted. He said, “It has been a long hard season but this was a really good finale.

“It was a tough game but we knew that Thornton would make life difficult for us and we ground out the win”.
