Top teacher honoured
Foulford Primary School pupils joined in celebrating the achievement of teacher Kirsten Darling, who was named Scottish Probationer of the Year at the 2008 Scottish Education Awards.
The awards celebrate the successes and recognise the achievements taking place within Scottish education. Kirsten was nominated by her colleagues for the category of Probationer of the Year and beat off tough competition to take the top spot.
Acting Head Teacher Flora Paterson said, “Everyone at Foulford Primary is very proud of Kirsten's achievement. She is a popular and hardworking member of the school community.
"She is highly regarded by her pupils, their families and her colleagues for her excellent contribution to teaching, learning and all aspects of school life.
Kirsten said, “This award was made possible through the support of all at Foulford Primary and in particular that of my mentor Margaret Innes. I am delighted to be continuing my teaching career at Foulford and I value all the learning opportunities which the school community has offered me.
“This has been a fantastic end to a very positive probationary year. I would like to express my thanks to all who have helped me during this time."
Tony Finn, Senior Manager Education Services said, “This is wonderful news for Kirsten – and very deserving – but equally good for the school. The judges commented that they were very impressed by the support Kirsten got from all at Foulford and that this had gone a long way to enabling her to develop her skills.
“This is the second year in a row that a probationer from Fife has won this award. This speaks volumes for the support offered to our probationers by our Continuing Professional Development team.”
Councillor Douglas Chapman, chair of Education and Children’s Services Committee said, "This is a huge accolade for Kirsten and testament to her hard work and dedication. It also speaks volumes for the quality of our teaching staff, the support of their colleagues and the wider education service."
Kirsten was presented with a trophy, certificate, £1,000 cheque for the school, and a £500 personal cheque at the awards ceremony in Glasgow. She will now go through to the UK-wide National Teaching Awards final.
