A new purpose built community centre for the Benarty area came a step closer when it was announced that the project had been awarded £2.1m over a three year period by Fife Council.

The money will help provide the basis of a new centre to be built at Flockhouse Avenue, Ballingry, to replace the current facility housed in the former school building off Hill Road.

The total project is likely to cost in the region of £4m to £5m and the £2.1m lays the basis for other monies to be drawn in.

Lochs councillor Willie Clarke said, "Everyone is positive that the project can be achieved within the timescale proposed.

"It will be a unique project which will provide a raft of services for the community and it will also provide for all council services as well as a library on the same campus."

He added, "I welcome this injection of cash on behalf of the community centre management committee.

"It is an exciting period and the management committee is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in the planning processes for the facility.

"This is yet another success story for the Benarty area. When you consider the new Benore Nursing Home, which is a £5m investment, the consultations which are now taking place about the future of Lochore Meadows Country Park, the new play area in Martin Crescent which was achieved by the Martin Crescent, Area Residents Association, BRAG'S purchase of the former Crosshill School which lays the basis for Brag's future, and the work by the Benarty Environment Group which has seen many projects set up to improve the environment along with the upsurge for house building with Rosewell Drive being a prime example, there is a lot going on

"The indications are that the Benarty area is on the up and confidence is high that people can work together to see a huge improvement in facilities in the area."
