Drug worker takes to the streets
A Crosshill drugs charity has appointed a new Youth Worker to take its message to young people.
Benarty Cares provides education and support for families affected by drug abuse.
Paul Anderson will raise awareness of the dangers of substance misuse to young people through drop-in services.
He explained: “I have set up a number of services in different parts of Lochgelly and Benarty that are accessible to young people. Support and advice is offered and available in many different ways, 1-2-1 work, group work or whatever the young person feels most comfortable with.
“I also offer free training sessions to staff from any organisation that would like to gain or expand their knowledge on drug, alcohol and sexual health issues.”
Paul’s services include a drop-in for drug, alcohol and sexual health information, condom distribution and pregnancy testing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 pm till 7 pm in Benarty Cares office, behind BRAG; on Fridays at Lochgelly High School from 12:45 pm till 1:45 pm in the medical room; and on Saturdays from 7 pm until 8 pm at BRAG’s internet café in Lochgelly.
He is also reaching out to young people “on there own ground” on Friday and Saturday night between 6 pm and 9 pm and some weekday evenings.
And he’s clearly relishing the challenge. Paul said: “It’s a great community. Everyone’s been very receptive so far. It’s going to take time to build up, and it’s a challenge that I’m really looking forward to.”
